Our History
In 1952, at the age of 25, Paul Caponecchia migrated to Australia. He and others made their way to the small township of Myrtleford where they worked on a variety of different farms as labourers. Soon the town was to be renowned as a tobacco growing community. Paul had worked on tobacco farms so in 1966 took the opportunity to buy land in Merriang and set up his own tobacco farm. This was a successful family business with his two sons Frank and Rob, until the year 2006 when tobacco unexpectedly ended for good in Myrtleford and Australia as a whole. The hardship took its toll on many local farms, especially the older generation. Many farms including the Caponecchia family tried diversifying into other farming ventures. Paul now elderly to do the manual work let Rob and Frank take on the role of finding something that would work . Experimenting with different vegetables and berries, which were already heavily established in the area, the boys decided to try something new. After extensive research and advice, they realised that the farm was a good choice for growing quality turf that could withstand the different elements of Mother Nature.
The name “Alpine Turf” comes from the beautiful Alpine Valley, the area which we are a part of.
In tradition of the Caponecchia family both brothers have taken over responsibility and management control of the farm to make it what it is today.
